This immersive experience is designed to bring you close to some of the most beautiful marine life on our planet. While we always strive to send you home with memories of this experience and moments of you with these animals, photography and "insta" content are not the main objectives of this trip.
Vava'u, Tonga
Tonga, a South Pacific gem, is renowned for its untouched beauty, but its greatest treasure lies in its waters, an annual aggregation of majestic humpback whales. These gentle giants migrate to Tonga’s warm, sheltered lagoons to breed and nurture their young, offering one of the world’s most awe-inspiring wildlife encounters. Visitors to Tonga can witness the incredible spectacle of whales breaching, tail-slapping, and nurturing their calves in an environment that feels almost untouched by time. Throughout the week you will observe incredible behaviours both above and below the waves. This could include playful newborns, adrenaline fuelled heat-runs and the surreal sounds of singing whales. You’ll also visit secret caves and weave between the idyllic islands that make up Vava’u.
Arrival in Vava'u
A warm Tongan welcome awaits as our private driver meets you at Vava'u Airport and transfers you to your waterfront accommodation.
We'll begin with a relaxed welcome dinner, giving you the chance to get to know your hosts and fellow guests while settling into island life. You'll also meet Jono Allen and hear about his passion for underwater photography, marine conservation, and some of the exciting projects he's involved in.
We'll then gather for an introduction to humpback whale behaviour, responsible wildlife interactions, and what to expect throughout the expedition. This session will help prepare you for safe, respectful and rewarding encounters with these incredible animals.
The rest of the day is yours to unpack, relax and adjust to island time before the adventure begins.
Explore the Island
Today is all about slowing down and experiencing the unique culture and beauty of Vava'u. As Sunday is traditionally a day of rest in Tonga, we'll spend the day exploring the island, gaining a deeper appreciation for its people, history and way of life.
The morning begins with a relaxed snorkelling session, giving you the opportunity to test your gear and become comfortable in the water before our whale-swimming days begin. We'll answer any questions, and share practical tips and techniques to help you get the most out of your time in the water with humpback whales.
Later, we'll explore the island together, visiting scenic viewpoints overlooking the turquoise waters of Vava'u, passing through local villages and learning about Tongan culture and daily life. Along the way, you'll hear stories and insights that offer a deeper understanding of the people and traditions that make this island kingdom so special.
After a day of exploration, you'll return to your accommodation for a relaxing evening before our first day on the water.
Swimming with Whales
After breakfast and a coffee, we'll head down to our private vessel and set off in search of humpback whales.
As we explore the waters of Vava'u, we'll scan the horizon for signs of whale activity, breaching, tail slapping, social interactions and mothers with their calves. You'll have the opportunity to enter the water and experience unforgettable encounters with these incredible animals in their natural habitat.
Our days on the water are unhurried and shaped by the whales themselves. While no two encounters are ever the same, every day brings the possibility of extraordinary moments. Depending on conditions and whale activity, we may also explore hidden sea caves, secluded beaches and some of Vava'u's most spectacular coastal scenery.
We'll pause for lunch in one of Vava'u's sheltered bays, enjoying fresh meals prepared by our private chef.
After a full day on the water, we'll return to our accommodation to relax, share stories, and review photographs and footage from the day's adventures.
Farewell
After a leisurely breakfast, we'll gather for a photography and editing session where you'll learn techniques for bringing your favourite images from the week to life and making the most of the memories you've captured.
There will be time to reflect on the incredible experiences shared throughout the expedition, exchange photos and stories with your fellow guests, and soak up a few final moments of island life before departure.
Sadly, it will then be time to say goodbye to Vava'u, new friends and the unforgettable encounters of the past week. Our private driver will transfer you to the airport for your onward journey home.
